I first watched this movie many years ago, in cantonese dub. I remember thinking it was nothing like what I had expected it to be (the disc art was misleading, and I had Laputa/Nausicaa in mind as well) and also that it was 'quaint' and 'heart-warming' (I wouldn't have used those words back then, but in hindsight that's how I felt about it).
I found an English subbed version on my computer a couple hours ago, and decided to watch it again for old time's sake. Watching it again, I realize that I'd forgotten everything about the movie except for the motif of library books and violins. I was a much better movie than I remember it being (though mostly because I wasn't going in with skewed expectations this time) and to tell the truth, my eyes are still a bit raw right now. I think the stuff the movie touches on hits a lot closer to home now that I'm older and have gone through similar feelings of confusion.
I don't want to disect it too much (still floating on that warm&fuzzy feeling right now ^^), but I do recommend seeing Whisper of the Heart if you haven't done so in recent times :)
Aside: I'm glad I can catch enough Japanese to match what's being said to the subs; the timing on my version was noticeably off at times.
