"If the application FileMaker Pro (FMP) is slow to open in Windows XP, the most common cause is the existence of a number of Temporary (.tmp) and Temporary Internet files. Temporary and Temporary Internet files are left behind when a machine crashes, from installing and uninstalling programs, and perhaps under other circumstances you really don't need to care about. For some reason FileMaker Pro has to look at every one of them as it launches. As the numbers of .tmp files build, so does the launch time." (source)
Launch time pre-cleanup: upwards of 5 minutes (I kid you not)
Launch time post-cleanup: 20 seconds
Ah the joys of inheriting an old machine.
This post (plus comments) also nicely summarizes my other gripes with FMP. The fact that the post is 6 years old (i.e. at least 4 iterations of FMP ago) and people are still adding "OMG me too!" comments kinda says something...
